History:
The Talothin are a sub-race of the Trothi; both are identical, share a common ancestry. Up until a certain point; about 200 Terran years ago. Which is when a neighboring species, that had been rather docile, decided that they wanted more space to live in. War erupted between the Trothi Space Militia and the Sovann Space Alliance. Each developing deadlier and deadlier weapons, never really using them on each other, just threating each with them. Along the line, of making the various ballistic weapons, the Trothi Military developed a Bio-Weapon, that would poison and kill any Sovann that came in contact with it. As the canisters were in transport, a Sovann scout ship, which was sent to destroy the bio-weapon, fired upon the Trothi ship carrying it. The attack succeeded, and the bio-weapon's transport as destroyed..Unfortunately, the bio-material wasn't; and was dispersed into the Trothi atmosphere. Rumors leaked out, informing the people of the planet what happened, and who manufactured the bio-weapon. The government denied all allegations directed towards them, instead they deflected all of the blame to the Sovann. Claiming it was a Sovann bio-weapon At first, everything went as normal. People believed it was an unsuccessful attempt. Though, several weeks later, hospitals began filling up with patients complaining of rather odd symptoms. Each case different, each more and more shocking. World-wide panic set in, as the patients began experiencing physical changes along with their physiological changes.
As the Military Scientists began studying the changes, they learned the cause of the mutations. The bio-material released by the Sovann weapon. After extensive studies, Trothi scientists learned that the Sovann's energy weapon altered the bio-material. Due to such, the chemicals within mutated. The altered bio-material avtivated dormant genes within various members of the Trothi people; thusly mutating them. The patients all developed unique abilities. Many of them frightening, many quite interesting. The Government played off of the paranoia, claiming that it was "...an attack by the Sovann. Which happened to fail. Your talents will protect others like you from changing! Join the Military!" That just happened to do it. The Mutated members of society weren't shunned, but cheered, welcomed. Years had gone by since the attack; and only those that were living on the planet at the time had become mutated. With such a large population, the 'norms' (un-mutated beings) decided to relocate to the planet's orbiting sister. The newly formed people named themselves Talothin, after a long worshipped deity by their people.
Abilities:
The mutagenic abilities of the Talothin vary from person to person. Some displaying obvious physical mutations, some with mental mutations, and some with physiological mutations. The manipulation of fire, water, earth, electricity; telepath, telekinesis, precognition; and, increased muscle mass, wings, additional limbs; are just a few of the possibilites.
Notable members of the Talothin species, which were members of Starfleet at various times in their lives, are:
Obsidion Heart, Executive Officer, Deep Space9. Absorb power from any energy source directed at him, allowing him to rechannel the energies as an amplified release or store it within his personal bio-energy reserves, where the energy acts to fuel his strength, endurance, and recuperative abilities to a degree or can be discharged as concussive force blasts.
